Questions before a care plan
Make “personalized” earn its place in the plan.
A useful answer names a change and gives a reason for it. Ask what the clinician would tailor, and what they would leave alone.
Try this question: “What would be different in my plan, and why?” Leave space for a reply. Choosing a medicine from a clinic’s list does not explain why that medicine fits your needs.
Ask who makes the decision.
September 26, 2026 is the date for this guidance check.
The clinician needs to assess you, even if you have already picked a medicine from the service’s list. Treatment cannot be based just on that choice. The Federation of State Medical Boards adopted that advice in May 2026.
This federation brings state medical boards together. Its advice can inform state boards. It does not create a single national law.
Keep the conversation on the reason for the choice. Ask what options the clinician considered. Ask what would lead them to decline the requested treatment.
Notes for this chapter
